The Walking Loop & Who Was Mary Jo Peckham
A paved path of just over a mile loops through the park and around the lake, a favorite morning walk for Katy neighbors. The park itself honors Mary Jo Hill Peckham, a longtime Katy civic leader known for helping anyone in need.
What's here
- A paved walking path of 1.02 miles.
- Views of the fishing lake, with ducks and water birds.
- Exercise stations along the way.
Good to know
The park is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and closed Thanksgiving Day, Dec. 24–25 and Jan. 1. Dogs must be on a leash 6 feet or shorter.
The walking loop
At 1.02 miles, the paved loop is long enough for a real walk but short enough for a quick lap before work. It circles the park past the lake, where anglers cast from the bank and ducks keep watch, and past the playground and courts. Two or three laps make a good workout, and the exercise stations add strength moves.
Tips
Walk early in summer to beat the heat, and bring sunscreen, insect repellent and water. Leave the bread at home: feeding ducks isn't good for them or the lake.
Who was Mary Jo Peckham?
The park is named for Mary Jo Hill Peckham, a longtime Katy civic leader who was widely known for her willingness to help those in need, a friend to anyone who needed care, guidance or assistance. Harris County Commissioners Court recognized her work by proclaiming June 18, 1991, as Mary Jo Peckham Day, and the park carries her name.
A community hub
Since the Aquatic & Fitness Center opened in 1994, the park has become a gathering place where, as Precinct 4 puts it, neighbors become family: seniors in morning water classes, kids at swim lessons, and families at the playground and lake.
